You know the drill…make a New Year’s resolution, stick to it for a month, and then forget all about it by February. Why do we do that? A new year is often framed as a fresh start and a chance to start over. However, each day is a new chance to be better. “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23)
God gives us grace every single day. In order to have a New Year’s resolution that you can follow through with, it’s important to choose one that can be incorporated into your daily life. When you choose a resolution that you feel is attainable, you give yourself the opportunity to celebrate your small daily changes that eventually evolve into a big-picture improvement.
That’s not to say that making large sacrifices aren’t worth it or possible, but consider saving those big commitments (like giving up social media or sweets) for Lent, where we make sacrifices to recognize the sacrifices that Jesus made for us. So, let’s take a look at some meaningful New Year’s resolutions that are worth making!
Be More Active
This isn’t a commitment to run three miles a day, lose 20 pounds or workout every single day of the week – just be more active! Have you ever noticed how you can take a walk through your neighborhood and come back in a much better mood? That’s because endorphins make us happy! Physical activity is good for our bodies and minds, and physical activity comes in all forms. Vacuuming the house, walking your dog, even a trip to the store gets your body moving. If you need more ideas, you can also check out the Holy Yoga TV library (and it’s free to new users for 30 days).
Be a Better Friend
Or husband, or sister or whatever you may be! No, we aren’t saying you aren’t already a good one, but how can you love harder, serve better and give more grace? Take the time in 2021 to lend your ear, offer to run an errand or just give the people that you love a check-up call. It may seem like a no-brainer but making an active effort just might make it a great year for everyone!
Actually Do the Thing
What have you been dreaming of doing, but just haven’t done yet? Maybe you want to start your own Etsy shop, volunteer for a charity or go on a family road trip. These may seem like big-ticket resolutions, but the truth is that there are simple things that you can do every day to reach your goal. Set aside some time each weekend, refresh your resume or swap out your takeout meal for a vacation fund, and you’ll be closer to your end goal!
