By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
~Genesis 2:2-3~
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
~Exodus 20 8-11~
God rested; He worked and seemed to delight in his work and then God rested; therefore, we should rest. It has something to do with our image creationally. It begins by stopping. But how do we stop in this culture that values performance over the person?
What we see is that too often we don’t stop until burnout and exhaustion comes in. Its what was modeled to us by our parents and leaders in most cultures around the world. However what is interesting is that Genesis 2 was before the fall There was no exhaustion or burnout yet. God didn’t rest because he had to; He rested in order to delight.
Sabbath is not about the fall, it’s about who we were made to be. BUT, because we live in a fallen world we don’t stop and rest. Instead we allow the narcotic of busy to drive us until we burn out.
Perhaps we need rhythms of ceasing or stopping?
How do we cease?
What would it be like to trust God with the things left undone? We say we can with our words, but the way we live often proves something very different. Trust is practiced, earned and it grows over time. As we practice a discipline we begin to grow into it, and eventually that trust feels more natural and less contrived
Below are some practices that may usher in a rhythm of ceasing
Practices that ease us into ceasing
At its heart this is about our creational identity: we were made to rest as a part of the rhythms of God. IF we don’t observe it we do get exhausted and we will fall apart.
Join us beginning April 6th for our FREE Spring Bible study, The Cure for Chaos. We will explore our creational identity and explore the radically life changing practice of refreshing rest. Save your spot here!
