Marriage is a sacred bond between two individuals who have chosen to embark on a journey of love and companionship. It is a commitment that requires patience, understanding, and compromise. As we navigate through life’s ups and downs, it’s important to remember the foundation on which your marriage was built.
With busy lives, we often forget the importance of physical touch. Even a simple hug or holding hands with a loved one can go a long way in improving our mental and emotional health. It can help us feel more connected to the people around us and create a sense of belonging.
Couples yoga helps facilitate the connection between people. It helps you learn who you are first and aligns your heart with the Lord. Each spouse must know who they are in Christ Jesus. Allow Him to guide and mold each other into the best partners for one another.
Doing yoga together requires trust and communication, which are two of the most beneficial elements to a healthy relationship. Yoga with your spouse will add to that with patience, mutual respect, forgiveness, and kindness.
Here are 4 easy couples yoga poses to practice together. We pray that you give this a try and it blesses your marriage as it did mine.
1. Simple seated back to back. Notice each others breath. Practice merging your separate breaths to one rhythm. Submitting unto each other becoming one.
2. Simple seated or butterfly pose. Get open and lean against one another back to back. One will fold forward while the other leans back. Utilize merged breathing and exhale when folding and heart opening. Inhale when returning to seated upright.
3. Trusting tree pose. Come standing hip to hip. Press hands together over head. Work together finding balance, strength, and focus as you lift the outer foot to the calf.
4. Assisted/supported hearting. One of you will lay on your belly while the other stands placing your feet at the hip. The standing person holds the hands (thumbs up – palms out) of the laying person, and the standing person leans backward (rotating shoulders out). Communication is important here.
Finally come to your backs, this is the invitation to pray together – for each other as the Bible says “a strand of 3 chords is not easily broken” meaning with God in the center of your marriage it is stronger.
God’s plan is unshakeable. Reflect on your marriage’s origin story and give thanks for the life you’ve built together. Reflecting on your marriage’s origin story can remind one of the love and passion that brought you together. It can also bring to light the challenges faced and the obstacles that have been overcome. By doing so, one can appreciate the growth and strength that your relationship has gained over time.
In the midst of life’s uncertainties, it’s easy to lose sight of the blessings you have. Taking the time to give thanks for the life you are building together can help maintain perspective and appreciation for what you have. Whether it’s the love and support of family and friends, the comfort of a loving home, or the companionship of a spouse, there is always something to be grateful for.
“Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other.” Romans 12:10 NLT
Moreover, physical touch has been shown to release oxytocin, a hormone that promotes bonding and trust. This can lead to deeper and more meaningful relationships with those we love. This is where yoga comes in.
Relearning your partner through a few poses can heal old wounds and mend a heart. It will continue to create a strong foundation with God as the center. You will find by trying yoga with your spouse will bring laughter, frustration, and stability.
After all the fun in working together breathing, stretching, balancing, using yoga to be a facilitator of reconnection.
“So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.” Ephesians 5:33 NLT
