In America, on July 4th, we observe Independence Day, which celebrates freedom and liberty for our country.
Freedom is a theme of our faith, too. The apostle Paul tells us that it is for freedom that Jesus has set us free (Galatians 5:1). Because of the freedom Jesus gives us, we don’t have to worry about our mistakes or bad choices—Jesus wants us to be free of guilt and shame!
The symbol of American freedom is the bald eagle, a large bird who flies free in the open skies.
For this 4th of July, you can practice Eagle Pose to help remember how Jesus has set us free and to practice thankfulness for the freedoms we have in our country.
Stand with your feet together. Bring your right elbow underneath your left elbow, then bring your palms together. Bend your knees deeply. Cross your right leg over your left, then use your toes on your right foot like a kickstand to stay stable. Bring your elbows toward your knees. Use your eagle eyes and imagine what you see below as you fly the skies. Stand up tall, and as you release your arms, spread them wide like wings. Return to standing in Mountain Pose. Repeat on the other side.
